Chickens in the Midst

It all started last week on Sunday when Ted and the girls went to the pet store to buy flea stuff for the cats and dogs. As they returned, I could see them walking towards the house out of the corner of my eye. When Ted walked in the door, I said, "Why is Hannah carrying a chicken?" And then three grinning faces burst into the kitchen...indeed with a live chicken.

I know what you are thinking. They got the chicken at the pet store. But you are wrong. This chicken was found flapping and flying down one of the streets in our neighborhood. Hannah and Gio are expert chicken catchers and they teamed up and caught this crazy, scared, flying chicken and ran into the van with it.

We meant to take her over to Chicken Paradise, a bed and breakfast owned by our friends Joe and Anne Barfield(www.http://www.chickenparadise.com/). But then on Monday, she layed a little egg. Five minutes later she was flying over the fence in our yard, earning the name Amelia Erhardt.

So we built an ark, a chicken ark. And then we called Joe and Anne and asked them to lend us a few chicken friends for our lonely chicken girl. They gladly obliged. Now the ladies are happily pecking and scratching in their chicken ark consuming yard bugs and veggie scraps. I'm sure they will all get a ride in the stroller before too long.
